Dr. Byrd is an educational psychologist whose research explores how inclusive school environments enhance students' motivation, belonging, and academic success, particularly in navigating race and culture. She studies how students develop the knowledge and drive to address systemic inequalities and supports students of color integrating their academic and racial identities in STEM. Through initiatives like #PassTheMicYouth, TEDxYouth@ChavisWay, and Dining with Democracy, Dr. Byrd helps young people tell stories and engage in civic dialogue to inspire change.
Dr. Byrd has a bachelor’s degree from Agnes Scott College and a master’s and PhD from the University of Michigan. Outside of academia, she is an avid escape room enthusiast who enjoys playing, running, and researching escape rooms as a tool for developing teams and teaching youth game design through programs such as Escape Room Camp.
