DAVID APPLEFIELD
David Applefield, a native of New Jersey, is a communications specialist, publisher, editor, writer, and media strategist, with a focus on social impact, entrepreneurship, and creative and innovative communications solutions.
Highly experienced in book publishing, Applefield is energized by helping compelling individuals, especially those motivated by value-based causes, to gain impact by developing their voices in all forms of shareable media, including books, journalism, and native advertising. Applefield also trains journalists and media professionals in Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean for the US State Department and the World Bank.
Since 1998, Applefield has worked for the Financial Times as its Special Representative for Africa, the Middle East, and Emerging Markets, developing special reports on countries and themes including Investing in Nigeria, Mauritania, Senegal, Rwanda, Liberia, Leading Business Women in Emerging Markets, African Farming, African Power, Combating Malaria,
and Innovation in South Africa.
In 2016, the FT elevated his position to include all potential Special Projects, and Applefield has since published reports on the US Steel Industry, Revitalized Cities: Pittsburgh, Revitalized Cities: Detroit, Youth Employment, Regenerative Medicine, and The Business of Refugees. He has recently introduced a new series of investment reports focusing on US States.
Between 2005-09, he served as media advisor to the President of Senegal.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Applefield lived in Newark, New Providence, and Livingston, NJ. He attended high school in Toronto, graduated from Amherst College with a BA in English and then completed a Masters in English at Northeastern University. Offered an internship in Paris, France in
1979, Applefield worked at UNESCO, then taught at the American University of Paris and Sciences Po. He published an international journal of contemporary writing called Frank, and founded a publishing house, Kiwai Media, devoted to publishing diverse works by thought-leaders. The US Department of State sent Applefield to train journalists and media professionals in Africa and the Middle East. He is the author of two
guidebooks to Paris, two novels, a language method for international students to learn English, and many articles and interviews.
A strong believer in participatory democracy, Applefield returned to his native New Jersey in 2019, and established residency in Red Bank, where he is running for U.S. Congress in the 4th Congressional District in the 2020 elections.
He and his wife, Julia Alvarez, have three children, Alex (33), Anna (26), and Ernesto (22).
