Ellen Prescott

Queer, disabled, non-binary author Jane Eaton Hamilton writes across genres, having published a children's picture book, one memoir, four books of poetry, two short story collections and one novel.

Their novel “Weekend” appears summer 2016, was called a "tour de force" by the Vancouver Sun, "propulsive" by Publishers Weekly and "The book to beat for the 2016 Lammy" by Julie Enszer.

Their memoir “Mondays are Yellow, Sundays are Grey;” retitled “No More Hurt,” was a Sunday Times bestseller in the UK, shortlisted for the MIND Book Award and the VanCity Book Prize, and appeared on the Guardian’s Books of the Year list.

Their poetry volume “Love Will Burst Into a Thousand Shapes” appeared fall 2014.

Their short story collection “July Nights” was shortlisted for the BC Book Prizes.

Their short fiction collection “Hunger” was shortlisted for the Ferro Grumley Award.

“Body Rain,” their first book of poetry, was shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Award.

Their chapbook, “Going Santa Fe,” won the League of Canadian Poets Poetry Chapbook Award.

They have been included in the Journey Prize Anthology, Best Canadian Poetry, Best Canadian Short Stories, and have had a Notable story in the Best American Short Stories. They have won many prizes for their short fiction, including, twice each, first prize in fiction in the CBC Literary Awards/Canada Writes (2003/2014) and the Prism International short fiction award. They have had 3 Notables in Best American Essays and won the 2020 Event non-fiction contest. They have published in the NY Times, Seventeen magazine, Salon, Macleans, VIDA, Numero Cinq, the Globe and Mail, the Missouri Review, Ms blog, the Alaska Quarterly Review and many other places. They have been a recipient of arts awards from the BC Arts Council and the Canada Council. Roxane Gay chose their essay "The Pleasure Scale" as one of Gay Magazine's Best of 2019.

They are also a photographer and painter, and were a litigant in Canada’s same-sex marriage case from 2000 until victory in 2003.
