LISTEN IN ON A SPECIAL CONVERSATION WITH BERNIE SWAIN
Q: Bernie, what is What Made Me Who I Am about?
A: The book focuses on turning points that have the power to change the direction of our lives. Turning points may come in the form of an inspiring person, a powerful influence, or even an unexpected event. Think of these as forks in the road that give you the opportunity to choose a new path.
Q: What are a few surprising examples that you can share?
A: Liz Murray overcame homelessness to attend Harvard. Bob Woodward was working as a janitor when he found his passion for investigative journalism. Condoleezza Rice’s life path was set in motion by her grandfather’s controversial decision over a hundred years ago. Tony Blair’s journey to becoming prime minister was almost derailed by Mick Jagger. Robert Reich’s mission to change the world began with the death of a childhood friend.
Q: The lives you profile in the book have had a mentor or life-changing experience. Is this required for success?
A: The simply answer is yes. Success and accomplishment don’t happen in a vacuum; they rise from our most profound experiences—if we’re paying attention. Alex Haley, the author of Roots, said, “When an old person dies, it’s like a library burning.” What he meant was that we learn from our experiences throughout life--and what we learn assembles within us like pages in a book. The pages in your book are your turning points. Who or what has influenced your life the most? What are your lessons learned? How have you been changed? The closer you pay attention, the stronger and wiser you become—and the more successful and accomplished you can be.
