The Bishop’s sacrifice

Chess is a metaphor of life. Everyone knows that. But this knowledge has become a commonplace and a novelist can easily fall into banality.

Stefano Sala didn’t. In his first novel, the subjects of the sacrifice in the game and the suicide in life work well together, and create a new level of metaphor: refusing to sacrifice a chess figure and to accept a stranger’s suicide become illogical and counter-productive choices that trigger paradoxical mechanisms and show to be wrong.

It may seem weird, but the chessboard too is a land of violence, abuse of power, desperate love and loneliness. Sala, with his fine writing, expose them lightly and clearly, free from smugness and flattery in the attempt to appeal the reader; he leaves out a reassuring and easy ending, and creates a strong and straight rapport with us. Whilst reading, we don’t feel the writer’s presence, but we listen to the charming and moderate voice of an old man sitting by a fireplace, who skilfully tells us the story. In the end, when the man walks out and says goodbye, leaving us by the fire, the novel stays. And it keeps us company until the fire dies out.
