Billy Bloom

Billy is a former professional Frisbee player, talent agent, TV commercial writer, volleyball league owner, and website founder.

After graduating from Vassar College, Billy—much to the chagrin of his father—spent a couple of years out on the road as a professional Frisbee player. He finished 6th in the 1983 World Flying Disc Championships, co-authored a book on Frisbee, and performed at hundreds of venues (including Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium) with his three-person demonstration team, Frisbee Magic. Following that, he worked as an agent trainee at the William Morris Agency in New York. He then went on to become an advertising copywriter at J. Walter Thompson and Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, writing TV commercials for such luminaries as Sonny the Cuckoo bird (Cocoa Puffs cereal) and Lucky the Leprechaun (Lucky Charms cereal). He quit the ad business in 1993, and cofounded the Big City Volleyball League, which grew to become the largest all-volleyball league in New York City. In 2003, Billy and a friend started a website, Zunafish.com, which was named one of TIME Magazine’s 50 Coolest Websites of 2006. In 2011, in what he believes to be his final vocational move, he returned to school to earn his Master’s Degree in Education at Hofstra University.

He’s currently an elementary school teacher in New York, and referees middle and high school volleyball and basketball games after school and on the weekends. Billy loves to tell people that he hasn’t tipped his barber since 1995—he’s been cutting his own hair for the past 20+ years!

Walter and the Wallet is Billy Bloom’s debut children’s book.
