Young Playwrights' Theater

As Washington, DC's ONLY professional theater company dedicated entirely to arts education, Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT) inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices.

By teaching students to express themselves through the art of playwriting, YPT develops students’ language skills, and empowers them with the creativity, confidence and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. YPT honors its students by involving them in a high-quality artistic process where they feel simultaneously respected and challenged and by engaging professional theater artists in producing student plays for the community.

In 2010, YPT published our first commercially-available book - Write to Dream: a Collection of Plays by the Students of Young Playwrights' Theater and the Tools to Turn Anyone Into a Young Playwright. Since then, we have published books of plays and poems written by our students, including every Featured and Finalist play in our annual New Play Festival! All are available for purchase on Amazon, with all proceeds supporting our FREE arts education programming in Washington, DC and beyond.
