J(ames) Terry Gates retired from full-time university teaching in summer 2001. He joined the faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1986 after elementary, secondary and higher education experience in Illinois, Ohio and Alabama. He chaired the Department of Music from 1994-1997, and was Director of Pre-Service Teacher Education and of the Teacher Education Institute in the Graduate School of Education 1999-2001. He also was part of the group that developed New York's Frameworks for Arts Education, and was a leading figure in developing the Goals 2000 grant for New York State arts assessments. His contributions to the research literature include history and criticism in music teaching and learning, edited books in music education, speeches and workshops, and articles on arts education policy. He was a member of the International Advisory Committee of the British Journal of Music Education and a past chair of the International Society for Music Education's Commission on Music in Education, Culture and Mass Media Policy. He is co-founder of The MayDay Group, an international organization of music education theorists. Gates is a former member of the Music Educators National Conference Publications Committee, the J. of Music Teacher Education editorial board and the Executive Committee of the Music Education Research Council. Gates' doctoral degree is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a student of Charles Leonhard, Richard Colwell and Harry Broudy. He lives in St. Louis, where he continues his research and international organizational work, serves on several regional boards of civic organizations, and maintains his activities as founding president/CEO of The Hoenny Center for Research and Development in Teaching. He is currently the editor of TOPICS, an online free-access, peer-reviewed journal in music education. "Georgie's Saturday Quest" is his first book for kids.
