Jeanne Julian

Jeanne Julian is the author of the full-length collection Like the O in Hope (The Poetry Box, 2019) as well as two chapbooks: Blossom and Loss (Longleaf Press) and Relic and Myth (Prolific Press). She was a co-winner of Reed Magazine’s Edwin Markham Prize in 2019, along with Rodrigo Toscano. A resident of South Portland, Jeanne has returned to New England after a sojourn in North Carolina (one of the best states for writers, she found, but one of the worst for hurricanes). As a co-coordinator of Nexus Poets in New Bern, N.C., she helped run a monthly poetry open mic and enjoyed membership in the North Carolina Poetry Society and other dynamic writers’ organizations. She was invited to read her work at the Carolina Mountains Literary Festival in 2017. Her poems appear in Prairie Wolf Press Review, Poetry Quarterly, High Desert Journal, North Carolina Literary Review, Kakalak, Snapdragon, pacificREVIEW, and The RavensPerch, as well as in several anthologies, including Lascaux Prize 2016 Anthology and The 64: best poets of 2018 from Black Mountain Press. Her work has won awards from The Comstock Review, Naugatuck River Review, and the North Carolina Poetry Society. She grew up in Ohio, graduated from Allegheny College, and earned an MFA in fiction from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her 27-year career in media relations and marketing for higher education (at Westfield State University) honed her skills in creative nonfiction and editing. Now, Jeanne is an enthusiastic photographer, and practices yoga when not distracted by hiking, making omelets, and tide-gazing. She also regularly writes reviews of newly-published books for the journal The Main Street Rag.
