Born in Roswell, New Mexico, I was a youngster at the time of the so-called Roswell Incident and have followed the controversy surrounding it. We tour the UFO Museum every time we are in town.
I spent my high school years on a 5,000 acre ranch in Graford, Texas. My father managed the ranch, which carried cattle and angora goats. We raised hundreds of orphan goats (nursed them in the house, of all places!). Daddy was a real, old-fashioned Texas cowboy!
I began entering writing contests, and participated in University Interscholastic League events, where I consistently earned first-place ribbons in Spelling and Ready Writing. I quickly learned that Poetry Reading wasn’t my thing!
My sophomore year, I entered a short piece entitled “I Was a Den Mother’s Daughter” in the Boys Life Magazine annual essay contest. Because essays were expected to be from a boy’s standpoint, the magazine created a special category in order to accommodate my entry. They presented my first place prize … a medallion and a portable typewriter … at an all-school assembly on a Friday the 13th in 1955! The essay was printed in that magazine later that year.
After graduating from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, I worked for years as a public school Speech/Language Pathologist. A ten-year “break” had me working in Data Processing … and later as a Paraprofessional in the Sports Medicine Library of the US Olympic Committee Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Now, “retired”, I am helping a son in his new business: building and selling one-of-a-kind rustic furnishings.
My husband, Steve, and I live on sixty acres in Adamsville, Texas (no orphan goats), where children and grandchildren can roam and enjoy nature. The older of our two granddaughters has been an invaluable assistant in creating Space Critters. She’s an honest critic and consultant
My interests? Family. Counted cross stitch (I have two projects right now). I ‘m a prolific reader and am currently reading three books, including Edgar D. Mitchell’s Psychic Exploration. I’ll read just about anything except horror stories. I read westerns (Louis L’Amour, W.A. Johnstone, Ralph Compton). I’ve probably read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Hobbit” series and the Jean M. Auel “Clan of the Cave Bear” series at least three times each. Most recently I’ve read The Martian by Andy Weir, Not of this World by Peter Kolosimo, and Marlfox by Brian Jacques. Another favorite author is Edgar Rice Burroughs. When just four years old, my youngest son’s favorite bedtime reads were his Tarzan books. I also enjoy Lee Child’s series with Jack Reacher; I like the way the character thinks!
I never seem to find enough time for writing, however. Possible scenarios wake me up at night, begging to get into the computer immediately. I even write ideas and notes riding down the road with my husband!
