Who is Helen Brown?
Foremost, she is a child of God. Her parents instructed her and their four other children in the ways of the Lord, from the day they were born. In her sixties, she is also a farmer’s wife, mother of five children, grandmother to seven and a great-grandchild. She has worked in administration, teaching and as a stay-at-home mother in varying degrees, during her married life.
The writing was something that never really looked possible, however, once an eye defect was discovered and fixed, learning and writing became easier. A book was no longer such an unrealistic dream. That was five books ago and a sixth is sitting on the sidelines. A promised to her husband, not to publish this book until all the stock she has sitting at home is sold, means that her immediate future is shrouded in fog.
Previously, she has from time to time written a poem or two, which she uses on her cards, however, her serious writing began back in 2011. This happened because she was asked to write small pieces for the church news sheet. Her mum acted as mentor and proof-reader, helping her to catch up on some of the grammar that was missed at school. After her mum’s promotion to Glory, in 2014, for about a year, writing every day was a way of dealing with the hole that was left in her life. Those stories are part of the last two publications and the sidelined one. She is currently trying her hand at fiction writing but still mostly writes what can be called autobiographical/devotional material.
Most stories are around 300 words long, some more, some less. This means that if the book is put down the thread of the story is not lost, there isn’t one, and it can be picked up for a quick read over a cuppa or as a nightcap.
