Mark Bowles

Dr. Mark Bowles is a Professor of History at American Public University System and an accomplished historian, author, and educator specializing in the history of science, technology, and medicine. He began his tenure with the University in March 2009 and has since distinguished himself through innovative curriculum design, engaging online instruction, and a deep commitment to student success. A former NASA historian, he has authored over 20 books, including award-winning works on the history of NASA, as well as college textbooks in digital literacy, United States history, and the global history of science.

Dr. Bowles earned his Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology from Case Western Reserve University and also holds an MBA in Technology Management, an M.A. in History, and a B.A. in Psychology. At APUS, he has developed numerous university courses, including History of STEM, as well as a new course on the History of AI, launching in July 2026.

His current work reflects a longstanding interest in the relationship between technology and human thought. In recent years, he has focused particularly on the history of artificial intelligence, developing innovative teaching projects such as AI Conversations with the Past, in which students engage with simulations of historical figures including Aristotle and Newton.

In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Dr. Bowles recently founded Obsidian Press, reflecting his ongoing commitment to helping original authors develop and share distinctive works, including a recently released book by Dr. Jeannette Potts on the naturally preserved mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico.
