Writer inhabits chosen generation of American optimists slammed to the ground by eventual realizations. Born in 1945 as America and its allies ostensibly prevailed in WW II, those coming of age during this period were culturally infused with a massive belief in manifest destiny, both national and personal. America had "won" the war, we were taught. It was the greatest country of all, truly exceptional in all ways, a beacon of hope and Constitutional wonderment. Throughout our youth, we carried this mystique close to our hearts and sense of identity. Then came Dallas, the surreal ascent of LBJ, the American War in Vietnam, mass repulsion, defiance, emerging contempt for amoral governmental policies, extreme alienation, psychedelia, herbal-based euphoria, wanderlust, focus on racial tolerance, acceptance of others, the liberation of women, Gays, environmental consciousness, arts renaissance, the primacy of candor, openness.
Writer helps define his age group. He is a product of his environment. Exiting college, entering the adult world, we found ourselves caught up in a genuine tidal wave of change, in the world around us and in our own electrified heads. Future planning gave way to war stopping. Love of country gave way to love of cosmos. As children, adults told us we were indeed a chosen generation, poised to lead the free world in post-war inevitability, anointed with historic purpose. Our collective sense of self soared high above reality, as we soon realized as assassins' bullets smothered our reverie, leading the way to indefensible decade-long war in a distant land no one had ever heard of, no one ever understood, then or now.
Writer points all of this out to inform interested parties that this backdrop defined his choice of profession, inspired his commitment to writing for a living, imparting to others deep convictions carried over from the past. I became a paid-lackey in the political field, recruited students for a liberal arts college, attended graduate school, played guitar for more than 10,000 hours, drove various trucks for many years, played in bands, wrote songs, performed, recorded, became a newspaper reporter/columnist, kicked around various locales, beats, dark alleys, won an award, got fired, got hired, authored several books, became an automotive specialist forging educational programs for retail employees and always kept writing columns everyday, saving many, creating various collections some of which now appear as e-books on the internet. I am married, am owned by a dog, have two sons, two grandchildren and at least two close friends.
