Nick Bowen is an inspirational author with a book of Christian poetry to his credit and a Christian coming-of-age novel in the works.
Nick has written poetry for many years, and has been inspired by Christian poets of the classical tradition such as Frederick William Faber, Gerhard Teerstegen, Bernard of Clairvaux, Christina Rosetti and Jeanne Guyon. This started on a business trip while trying to get to sleep in a hotel room. He says, "A poem just flooded my spirit; I turned on the light and wrote it down, then tried to get to sleep. It happened again - and again - and again - and continued for four hours. Those poems are in a book that we had printed to give to family and friends."
Since then Nick has written volumes of poetry, and there is no end in sight. "Poetry is a refreshing change from the endless reams of teaching material that come out. We are over-taught and under-inspired, and I aim to change that!"
His novel began as a two-page English assignment in his freshman year in college (many years ago!) The prof gave it an A+ and wrote "Excellent - come see me about this," but he never did. Consequently, it stayed fresh and alive in his heart and mind until after his retirement from business, when he began to flesh it out.
"I don't write the poems - I just write them down. There is a place in my heart where the words come. It amazes me more than anyone else. I also write songs in several genres, including country gospel, worship, and what I call 'Types and Shadows,' inspirational songs about Bible characters. I guess I'm right-brained."
Nick and his wife experienced a dramatic conversion in 1971 when they were saved in their sleep one night and woke up as new creations in Christ ("yes, I wrote a poem about that"), experiencing the awesome Presence of the Lord in their lives from that day on. "I knew that I had found not only what I had been searching for, but the ultimate meaning of life, which is an intimate relationship with the God of the Bible. This is no mere head-knowledge thing but a life of complete fulfillment and satisfaction in the only One who can give that."
They have three children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Family and church are the backbones of their life together.
