Shelby Scott

Shelby Scott, Christian Scott and Brendan James are all "Pen" names used by Ron Lees.

Ron is an avid record collector who's musical tastes span the earliest music produced on cylinder through to the music he first grew up listening too - classic rock of the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

While Growing up in Massachusetts in the 1980's (he still lives there) Ron was introduced to classic rock. At the time most radio stations were playing rock from those era's and it wasn't  long before Ron learned the names of as many songs, groups, their members and anything else he could.

About 4 years after his 1986 high school graduation he was introduced to earlier styles of music like Rockabilly, Doo Wop,old time Country etc. Although he had a nice collection of records, he never considered himself a record collector.

That all changed in the early 1990's, That is when Ron went on the hunt, searching for record collections by advertising in the local "Want Ad". It didnt take long before he found what he was looking for, a nice collection of 2,000 or so records, but when he went to look at the collection it wasnt what he had expected. There were about 2,000 records but they werent the albums or 45's he thought he was going to find. They were all the old shellac 78 RPM records from the 1920's and 1930's.

Not knowing anything about 78's at that time, he was uncertain what to do but the collection fascinated him as it included types and styles of music he had never heard of up until then including "Dance Bands" an early form of Jazz, ragtime, swing and even classical and some opera records were included (although it may have  taken a few years for him to spin one of those classical and opera records, once he did he loved them).

Through the years Ron became a respected collector / dealer of music and sold through Goldmine and Discoveries magazines in the 1990's long before the eBay explosion (he can be found on eBay today under the username soundnostalgia).

Being a history buff he started following the history trail of recorded music by reading books, corresponding with fellow collectors and dealers and gathering a multitude of information that is listed on each and every record label and in the deadwax area. In addition he would spend his time  foraging through old record company catalogs and correspondence and picking the brains of several old time radio station personnel who he has had the pleasure of meeting and purchasing collections from.

He didn't know it at the time but that was the start of what would push him towards the love of writing and sharing all the information that he had gathered over the years while putting that information in a user friendly format.

One thing is certain, Ron's musical tastes and appreciation is vast and it shows with all the books he has compiled from his Jimmie Roders discography, 45 RPM record company sleeve identification and price guide to his King Crimson Discography. But it's not just in his writing but you will also find a wide array of many musical genres within his current collection of approximately 10,000 records.

Ron continues now to write and compile books (and always has one or two and sometimes more in the works at any given time) and has no plans to stop so keep an eye out for one of his new books...you never know what he's going to write about next.
