Max Sharam's career started as a cadet journalist for regional and suburban newspapers, later working professionally as a stand-up comedienne before signing to Warner Music as a singer-songwriter/recording artist. She is an award winning, classically trained musician and Master of Fine Art.
Max's writing is charged with an eerie, dreamlike quality, appearing on first glance as whimsical, yet there is a disquieting aspect to her aleatoric play. Her fascination with character and 'visual storytelling' is evident in her narratives—that she describes as 'melodies'—mining childhood memories, 'misfit' characters struggle with the question of equality and identity. Always defending the marginalized and disposed, Max frequently explores media constructions of gender roles, placing her female characters in extreme emotional states—designed to expose the vulnerable underbelly and the universality of awkwardness, allowing the reader or audience to probe the border between innate and learned behavior.
Max deftly navigates the gap between reality and imagination, while blending effortlessly the psychological, conceptual and political. You are left questioning the idiosyncratic origins of your opinions and the degree to which everyday gestures and emotional states are scripted and performed.
Max continues to tell stories in song, art and video. Max's music can be found on iTunes, YouTube or Amazon.
