Denise Birkhofer

Denise Birkhofer (PhD Institute of Fine Arts, New York University) is a curator and art historian based in Toronto, Canada. She previously held positions at The Image Centre (Toronto Metropolitan University), the Allen Memorial Art Museum (Oberlin College), and the Grey Art Gallery (New York University). A scholar of art and photography after 1900 in Europe and the Americas, Birkhofer has published on such artists as Eva Hesse, Roberto Matta, Doris Salcedo, and Mira Schendel. Among numerous other exhibitions, she is the curator of "Latin American and Latino Art at the Allen" (2014), "Judit Reigl: Body of Music" (2016), "Fred Wilson: Black to the Powers of Ten" (2016-17), "The Faraway Nearby: Photographs of Canada from the New York Times Photo Archive" (2017), and "Otherworldly: Deborah Turbeville Photographs" (2024).
