Stein was the website polar historian for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY), and created the exhibit, "The Lady Franklin Bay Arctic Expedition (1881-84) and the First International Polar Year" at the University of Central Florida. In acknowledgement of his contributions during the IPY, Stein received the Certificate of Appreciation from the World Meteorological Organization (Switzerland) and The International Council of Science (France). His two part article "The Voyage of HMS Investigator (1850-54)," was awarded the OMRS Journal Prize 2008-09.
Dr. Paul Berkman, Chair of the International Board for the Antarctic Treaty Summit, (November/December 2009) invited Stein to design a commemorative medal for the event. Only 125 medals were struck, with many being presented at the Smithsonian Institution during the Summit. In December 2013, Stein was awarded the USCG Seventh District Command Performance Recognition Medallion by Rear Admiral John H. Korn, Commander, USCG Seventh District, for his diligence in recommending lifesaving awards.
