The Great Wall drew me to China in 1986, and I spent two years attempting to follow its ruins from west to east, a story told in 'Alone on the Great Wall'. Since 1990 I've lived permanently in China, exploring its various dynastic Walls, and researching and spearheading the Wall's protection. As well as writing a number of books I've produced a documentary aerial view of the Great Wall's diversity, shot by my two sons James and Thomas, that was screened on BBC4 as 'A Slow Odyssey: The Great Wall' in February 2019.
