Arnold D. Marsh

Arnold (Arnie) Marsh is a retired Navy officer with more than twenty years of active duty experience. During that career he was stationed on five ships (USS Newport News, USS Waccamaw, USS Talladega, USS Regulus, and USS Sanctuary. He also had assignments at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Military Sealift Command, Naval Postgraduate School, Recreational Services Pilot Program, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Military Command Center.

Of those, perhaps two were the most interesting to the public, The first is the USS Regulus (AF-57) which was shipwrecked on an uninhabited island on August 18, 1971 in Typhoon Rose. Commander Marsh was the ship's Executive Officer before the storm, and Acting Commanding Officer afterward. His book, "The Flag and the Albatross" is the true story of the shipwreck and events leading to it.

The other assignment of interest was the USS Sanctuary (AH-17), a hospital ship that was the location of the Navy experiment to have the first enlisted women sailors (65 of them) assigned to shipboard duty. The Commander was Officer in Charge/Prospective Commanding Officer/Prospective Executive Officer during an extended shipyard period. It's an interesting tale of humor, leadership, and success in a difficult assignment; someday he may write about it.

Following his Navy career Arnie had a second career as Director of Human Resource Development in two large companies, American Cyanamid Company and the Lancaster General Hospital. He now resides in a renowned retirement community in Lancaster, PA.
