L. Thomas Winfree Jr.

Tom Winfree, Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at New Mexico State University, retired from teaching in 2014, after a career spanning 5 decades. Tom is the co-author or co-editor of eight textbooks and anthologies in 24 editions, including most recently Juveniles in Contemporary Society: Understanding Juvenile Justice and Delinquency (with S.D. Trujillo and C.E. Posadas, Essentials of Criminological Theory (with Jennifer Wareham and Howard Abadinsky); Introduction to Criminal Justice: The Essentials (with G. Larry Mays and Leanne F. Alarid), and Contemporary Corrections (with Rick Ruddell and G. Larry Mays). New editions of the last two books are coming soon. Winfree has contributed widely to the professional literature in criminal justice and criminology, authoring or co-authoring over 120 journal articles and book chapters. He writes on youth gangs in the United States and Europe, professional socialization within police communities, and a wide range of topics related to prisons and jails. Many of his research articles have been reprinted in anthologies. In retirement, Tom continues to contribute to both the professional literature in criminology and criminal justice, mainly through new editions of existing textbooks. He also enjoys traveling throughout the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe, both as a tourist and as a scholar.
