Alison L. Joseph is the Director of Digital Scholarship and Associate Professor of Bible at Gratz College. She joined Gratz after many years working in the academic and publishing worlds. Dr. Joseph was most recently the Director of Digital Projects at the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization, where she spearheaded building digital archives and translating print material for digital consumption. She is also an active teacher, public lecturer, and communal leader at schools, synagogues, and Jewish summer camps. She received her PhD in Hebrew Bible and Jewish Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MA in Jewish Studies from Emory University. She also holds undergraduate degrees from Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Dr. Joseph is the author of numerous publications, most notably Portrait of the Kings: The Davidic Prototype in Deuteronomistic Poetics, which received the 2016 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise. Her research explores the processes by which the Hebrew Bible was produced, bringing together historiographical, literary, and gender criticism as it illuminates the author/redactor’s role in interpreting and rewriting earlier texts. She is also a member at large of the board of the Association for Jewish Studies.
