Victor Tan Chen

Victor Tan Chen is a sociologist who studies unemployment, inequality, and social policy. His book, Cut Loose: Jobless and Hopeless in an Unfair Economy, was published in July, 2015. With Katherine Newman, he coauthored The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America, a top-selling and critically acclaimed sociology book. Chen is an assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his degrees from Harvard University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the founding editor of In The Fray, an online magazine devoted to personal stories on global issues.
