Frank Yau

Frank Yau’s family origins are in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. He was born in Guilin, Guangxi, in 1944 and moved to Taiwan in 1949. After studying at The High School of Taiwan Normal University, he earned a bachelor’s degree from National Taiwan University. He moved to the USA in 1968 and received a Ph.D. of Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Afterwards he worked in the petroleum industry for over thirty years. Frank started his career as a researcher for EXXON. He later served as Vice President of Enron Oil & Gas China and General Manager of Burlington Resources China, overseeing US-Chinese collaborative efforts and the development of Chinese petroleum resources, with a focus on tight oil and gas (including shale) production. The author was a participant in the Diaoyutai political movements of the early 1970’s. Later, as a participant of a dialogue session with Deng Xiao Ping during his 1979 US visit, the author proposed the acceleration of technology exchanges and cooperation among China, the US, and Taiwan. In 1983, he organized and was elected as the first president of the Chinese Petroleum Association of North America, which promoted such technology exchanges and cooperation in the petroleum and petrochemical industries. A lover of history and geography, he has travelled across the US, mainland China, Taiwan, and the seven continents, taking in natural beauty and local culture, while discovering hidden histories not found in text books. He has published approximately 200 articles, including “The Visit of the Dadu River Battlefield—A comparison between the success of the Red Army’s Long March and the defeat of Shi Dakai’s Taiping Rebellion”; “New Findings on the Tianzhong Memorial”;“My memory of the Huaihai in 1948”; “Visit to Easter Island”; “India, a Blend of Light and Darkness”; and“Memories of my years at the High School of Taiwan Normal University.” He has published four books: “The Unlimited World”; “The Endless Journal”; “Untold Stories along the Ancient Path”; and “The True Story of Fatty.” The forthcoming “Talks Under the Moon and by the River”is being prepared for publication.

卜一，原籍江蘇徐州，1944年生於廣西桂林，1949年赴台，曾就讀於師大附中、台大機械工程系。1968年赴美，後取得普渡大學（Purdue）機械工程博士。從事石油開發及管理工作三十餘年，先於埃克森公司（EXXON）進行研究工作，後任安然中國石油天然氣（Enron Oil & Gas China）副總裁（Vice President）、柏靈頓中國資源公司（Burlington Resources China）總經理( General Manager)，從事中美石油合作及中國石油開發工作，著重於緻密油、氣層（譬如頁岩）的開發生產。作者曾參與20世紀70年代保衛釣魚台運動，並於1979年鄧小平訪美期間晉見會談，建議加速海內外科技交流與合作；後於1983年參與籌建北美華人石油協會，任首任會長，促進中國大陸台港及美國的石油石化科技交流合作。著者喜好史地，曾暢遊大陸、臺灣、美國及世界七大洲，觀山川海宇、體民俗風情、覓古今軼事。

曾發表專文：《憑弔大渡河古戰場—紅軍長征成功與太平天國石達開覆敗之比較》、《田中奏摺—舊事新探》、《我的1948淮海回憶》、《復活節島探訪記》、《輝煌與黯淡同在的印度》、《憶師大附中的崢嶸歲月》等約兩百篇；及出版《走不遍的天下》、《行遠無涯》、《古道拾遺》、《胖子正傳》四本書；另《笑談江月》付梓中。
