Don Bloch was raised on a small dairy farm in Minnesota. He spent six years at Crosier minor seminary, Onamia, Minnesota. He spent more than two years at St. John's major seminary, Collegeville, Minnesota, where he got his BA in philosophy. He became a hobo for a while. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was a pilot instructor during the Vietnam War. He got his wings at Vance AFB, Enid, Oklahoma, and his Pilot Instructor rating at Randolph AFB in San Antonio.
Bloch spent more than twenty years working as a special agent/pilot for the Drug Enforcement Administration. He made undercover buys of heroin, cocaine, and other drugs. He flew undercover and surveillance missions. He flew in the Mexican mountains of Sinaloa hunting poppy fields, and in the jungles of South America hunting cocaine labs. He has written two books about his experiences: "A Shadow at the Gate", and "Flying Uncle's Junk."
