Anne M Chappel

I have had a long interesting life ending up in Adelaide, Australia - now the last of my family.

I was born in Tanganyika on Lake Victoria. My early years were filled with adventure and travel and made me an independent person. At 11 I was sent off to boarding school in South Africa and promptly called a 'Zanzibar-barbarian' as schoolkids do. We lived in Zanzibar till I was 16 and the revolution of 1964 took place. We went to live in Durban South Africa where I went to University during the worst years of apartheid. I joined the Black Sash and was very aware of the awful nature of the regime. When I was 40 after the birth of my daughter and son and the failure of my first marriage, I emigrated to Australia with my second husband. The outlook in South Africa was bleak. And here I remain, thinking of Africa and writing about it.
