Timothy A. Storlie, M.S., MSW, Ph.D., is a psychologist, licensed counselor, medical social worker, and hypnotherapist. With 20+ years of gerontological-oriented professional experience, Dr. Storlie has provided person-centered counseling to hundreds of older adults. He developed a county-wide program to instruct older adults on how to use public transportation, served on an interdisciplinary team charged with investigating cases of suspected elder abuse, and conducted assessments of older adults residing in skilled care nursing facilities.
As a medical social worker, Dr. Storlie provided communication-related training for the staff of home health and hospice agencies, facilitated bereavement support groups, consulted with physicians and nurses on how to improve provider-patient relations, and developed a reminiscence-based program for use by hospice patients. He was a popular community college adjunct instructor where he taught a "standing-room-only" course entitled Therapeutic Communication for the Health Professional. In addition to writing, counseling, and teaching, he enjoys coaching doctoral students majoring in counseling, gerontology, psychology, or social work.
Committed to reducing ageism, Dr. Storlie is a passionate advocate for the person-centered approach to communication between providers and older adults. Current research interests include therapeutic daydreaming, stress and health, the use of hypnosis to improve the quality of life of those with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, integrative medical and mental health care, and establishing jargon-free, plain language standards for human services professionals. He currently serves as a Stress Topic Expert for the GoodTherapy.org blog and as Field Editor for the Social Trends section of Techcastglobal.com—a research-based global forecasting corporation.
Dr. Storlie graduated from Saybrook University where he earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a dual concentration—Integrative Health Studies and Consciousness and Spirituality. He also completed a post-doctoral certificate in Dream Studies and developed a self-paced, video-based course on Intentional Daydreaming (for more information, see his web site www.Intentional-Daydreaming.com). Prior to receiving his doctorate, he completed a B.S. in Education from Portland State University and two graduate degrees also from PSU—an M.S. in Special Education and an MSW in Social Work. Dr. Storlie is a nationally certified, WA State Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Registered Hypnotherapist, and Certified Master Level Trainer in NLP. A long time martial arts enthusiast, Timothy holds a black belt in Eclectic Martial Arts.
