Denis Toovey

Born in Perth, Western Australia Denis graduated as a pharmacist at Royal Perth Hospital. He held a number of management and clinical positions, working with administrators, doctors, nurses, patients and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.

In 1985 Denis and his family moved to New Zealand, where he took up two hospital pharmacy management roles. He then worked for the Preferred Medicines Centre, advising doctors on cost-effective medicine usage. After this he and his wife Judy bought a community pharmacy and won the prestigious Trustpower Customer Choice award three years in succession, in recognition of their holistic (big picture) customer service and advice.

During his time in the community pharmacy, Denis had a health challenge that was solved by a holistic local doctor when his regular doctor had no answers. This opened up his mind to the concept of big picture health with a focus on curing and preventing disease, not merely treating symptoms with medicines and surgery.

Still with a passion to share what he has learned over 45 years, Denis has written this book, Better Health for You, designed to show people ways to be more involved with their health. The wide range of topics include; How to lose weight, how to ensure you are getting reliable health information, ways to reduce your chances of dying early, understanding what a healthy lifestyle means, how the health system works and how to yet the best from health professionals and the treatments they provide.
