I started to work at the University of Worcester in April 2012, and I am the Course Leader for the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood (Professional Practice), in the Centre for Early Childhood. Although I have taught education for almost 20 years, I still consider myself first and foremost to be a nurse. I trained as a Registered General Nurse and I qualified as a Registered Sick Children’s Nurse at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Part of the attraction of applying to work at Worcester was because I knew that I was joining a team with a long pedigree of writing some of the most influential books in the field of Early Childhood. Colleagues with a long established back catalogue of books were generous with their time and wisdom and were more than happy to pass their experience on to a fledgling author. So with their help (in particular thank you Michael Reed!) I took up offers of writing chapters for books.
I am deeply committed to researching and publishing about children’s health and well-being, but my publications are not limited to this area as my first co-authored book with Nicola Stobbs reflects. Nicola and I noticed that there was a gap in the market for a book to support students in their practical experience in early years settings. The Nutbrown Review of childcare qualifications was published in June 2012. The Review contained many recommendations about the place and importance of practical experience. We also had out own twist on some of the information that we thought students would find helpful. We knew that they would find it helpful because the students wrote the contributions for the book. After what seems like a mad period of researching, writing, editing and re-drafting, with Julia Morris from Critical Publishing helping us every step of the way, A Critical Guide to Early Years Placements was published in March 2015.
Away from work, i enjoy walking, playing tennis, reading and spending time with my family - and of course, writing!
