Chris Innes, Ph.D.

Chris Innes retired from the U.S. Department of Justice early in 2014 after a thirty-five year career in which he was an active participant at the national level in the research on and the policy debates about corrections and our systems of justice. At the time, Innes was Chief of Research and Information Services at the National Institute of Corrections, but had also served in a variety of research and management positions within the Department, including at the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the National Institute of Justice. Before joining the government, he helped establish the Criminal Justice Data Archive at the University of Michigan. He also served as both Chair and Vice-Chair of the American Correctional Association Research Council and was the 2011 recipient of the Peter P. Lejins Research Award from ACA. His earlier research focused primarily on prison operations, practices, and policy. Later, he more often worked with corrections agencies on developing and implementing innovative approaches to changing correctional cultures. What he learned in doing that work formed the basis for his book, Healing Corrections: The Future of Imprisonment.
