Born and raised in Jerusalem, he was drawn from an early age to the historic treasures of this ancient city and its complexities. When commencing his university studies he decided to focus on Art History, mostly Medieval Art, with special emphasis on Christian studies. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Art History from the Hebrew University and a Master’s degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Art History from Tel Aviv University.
During his studies, and while writing for the acclaimed newspaper Haaretz and its English edition, he further deepened his knowledge of contemporary Christian communities in Israel and became more intimately familiar with them.
The book Churches and Monasteries in the Holy Land is the result of extensive research spread out over more than five years. During this period, Mr. Rapp used historical, cultural, religious, archaeological and artistic perspectives to study many of the Holy Land's Christian sites in depth. In addition to first-hand visits, he interviewed numerous clergymen and believers as well as experts in various related disciplines.
Recently, David Rapp published an audio podcast dedicated to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. He is currently collaborating with photographer Hanan Isachar to document liturgical Christian festivals in the Holy Land and also further explore the churches of Jerusalem.
