Lea Maurer

Lea Maurer led the women’s swim team at Stanford University as its head coach from 2005 to 2012. During that time, her teams won two conference championships and finished in the top four spots at the NCAA in each of her last six years including a runner-up finish in 2010. Maurer was twice named the PAC-10 Coach of the Year by her peers. Her swimmers achieved outstanding results accumulating 13 individual NCAA titles, 37 conference championships and 163 All-America honors. Maurer’s athletes represented the United States and earned medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, World University Games, Pan Pacific Championships and Pan American Games. In addition, her swimmers have established NCAA, American and World Records. Prior to returning to Stanford, Maurer led Lake Forest High School for nine years during which time her teams won three state championships and two mythical national championships. Maurer competed as a swimmer at the highest levels of the sport earning a gold and a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games, winning the 1998 World Championship in the 100 m. backstroke and holding the American Record in the 100 m. backstroke from 1992 until 2001. Maurer is a volunteer coach with the Stanford University men’s water polo team focusing on stroke technique and conditioning. She and her husband have two sons, Luke and Rex.
