Paul is Professor of Digital and Anatomical Education at the University of Glasgow. He is Director of Innovation, Engagement and Enterprise (IEE) within the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing (SoMDN). He has strategic leadership and management responsibilities with his IEE team delivering and implementing the three pillars of the strategy: driving innovation and enterprise; employability for careers, growing entrepreneurs and enhancing regional economic/societal impact. In addition, he is a member of the Executive Group of the SoMDN, Senate Assessor for Student Conduct, leads the largest single site Body Donor Program in the UK, and is as a Licensed Teacher of Anatomy (with the Scottish Parliament).
In public engagement he has led the 20-fold increase in activities aimed at the public over the past three years. These events collectively have reached over 3000 members of the public and have included Night at the Museum of Anatomy events, monthly Museum of Anatomy showcases and tours, student partnerships for leading PE events, and facilitated tailored events related to sexual health, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, cancer and mobility issues and medtech applications in health and disease. He is a regular invited speaker at major science festivals and events both locally and nationally related to medtech and body donation.
He is the founding and current Series Editor for the Biomedical Visualization’s 25 book volumes. It has published 253 chapters with over 240,000 downloads across these volumes, with contributions from 582 different authors, from 145 institutions in 24 countries across the globe. These volumes are read in 79 countries with >1200 citations. He is a regular invited keynote conference speaker (40) and presented 65 additional invited conference presentations.
His research created a long-standing strategic partnership with the School of Innovation and Technology, The Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow. This led to multi-million pound investment in creating world leading 3D digital datasets. He devised and led the creation of the world's first PGT MSc Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy (accredited by the Institute of Medical Illustrators) combining anatomical, digital technology and visualization training, was the Founding Director and managed the degree for 12 years. He led college-wide, industry, multi-institutional and NHS projects.
