John Pennington

As head coach, John Pennington has led the West Virginia State University football team since 2017. Prior to his arrival, the Yellow Jackets went 8–55 over seven seasons. Since then, Pennington has compiled a 44–36 record with six winning seasons.

Coach Pennington is more than just a football coach, having earned an MBA and a PhD in leadership. Under his helm, he has coached numerous all-conference players and led his team to a 3.0 GPA in 2019.

Pennington previously coached at Concord University and West Virginia Tech and began his career as a graduate assistant at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He attended West Virginia University, where he played football and went down in program history for “The Catch.”

Pennington resides in Charleston with his wife and their three children.
