James Geach

I am a specialist in the field of galaxy formation and evolution: basically that means trying to answer these questions: where do galaxies come from, what makes them grow, how do they change over time?

I hail from the village of Duloe in South East Cornwall, but currently I am Royal Society University Research Fellow based in the Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR) at the University of Hertfordshire. I did my degree in physics at Imperial College London, my Ph.D. in astronomy at Durham University and - after graduating - I was a post-doctoral researcher at Durham and Banting Fellow at McGill University in Montreal. I returned to the UK in 2013 and have been at CAR ever since.

I've always enjoyed writing, and after my first popular science article "The Lost Galaxies" appeared in Scientific American, I embarked on writing my first full blown popular science book "Galaxy: mapping the cosmos", recently published by Reaktion.

I like trying to break down complex ideas into simple language, and communicate the cutting edge of astronomical research, in a way that anyone can understand.
