Donald L. Blount, P.E., founded Donald L. Blount and Associates, Inc., a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering design office in 1988. The company provides marine design, engineering, and consulting services for high-speed special-purpose commercial, military, and recreational craft for domestic and international clients. Noteworthy vessels from this design office include the 67.7 m (222 ft) DESTRIERO, which holds the non-refueled Atlantic crossing record in 1992 with an average speed of 53.1 knots (61 mph) and the 41m (135 ft) GT/MY FORTUNA, the former Royal Yacht of Spain, having a speed of 68-plus knots (78-plus mph).
Donald previously served as Head of the Department of the U.S. Navy's Combatant Craft Engineering Department (CCED) and had been employed at the David Taylor Model Basin prior to working at CCED. During his 15 years of employment at David Taylor, Donald conducted individual research and directed engineering programs relating to emerging technology in the field of hydrodynamics.
He has co-authored more than 50 papers and articles for technical societies in various countries. He is a registered professional engineer in two states and is a Fellow of both SNAME and RINA. He graduated from George Washington University in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
