ABOUT THE AUTHOR / ME
My parents gave me the name Richard Jarrett Overgaag. Most beings on this earth with the ability to speak call me Jarrett.
All humans have a reason to be here. A purpose. It is something that resonates with you. Something you feel at your core. Some call your destiny. I prefer the term “element” made famous by Sir Kenneth Robinson – an English author, speaker and international advisor on education in the arts to government. We all have at least one element.
I have two for sure – teaching and writing. I have taught in some since for most of my life. I was a head lifeguard in high school. I taught swim lessons, cpr, first aid, and lifeguarding. I work in the early 90’s in the toughest ghetto (highest murder per capita) in the San Bernardino County of California. Through college I had this job and couldn’t help trying to teach the juveniles at this pool to better their life.
After getting my degree in Business I went corporate. I achieve great success and found myself teaching at seminars for the company. After deciding that I was done with the corporate world I starting selling real estate. I became the office’s top producer and was again teaching. Now both in house and out on panels at real estate and motivational seminars. I wrote a book on entering the real estate business, but never published it - just taught many of the ideas in person.
In 2006 the real estate bubble burst. I went from a large income to almost no income. Fortunately my wife had become an RN and I didn’t have to go back to corporate America. My days became more free because of the lack of business. I spent time with my five kids.
During this time, I realized that - while I was very good in business - my true element was teaching. I also decided that the subjects I had been teaching in the business world were not the most important things I knew. I recognized that the human spirit and happiness were dependent on things like attitude, mental, emotional and physical well-being, spirituality, and the realization of unity - not only with others, but the entire universe.
I had been practicing Martial Arts – Jiu Jitsu. I started teaching the kids classes. There I was able to teach things like breathing, dealing with fear, and discipline. I went to the school district and signed up to be a guest teacher. I teach the children breathing, dealing with fear, developing positive self-talk, making choices using their heart and intuition, health and other subjects that make for living a better life.
I was also writing a jiu jitsu blog in which I would teach life lessons through the art of Jiu Jitsu. It got a great responds and loved ones and friends encouraged me to write more. In 2014 I had a conversation with a real estate broker turned writer. I also got a random email about self-publishing that I found interesting. The encouragement from my wife (and others, but mainly her) and these two random occurrences sparked a flame. Within 7 weeks I wrote and self-published my first book, Meditation: A Path to Awareness.
Between the blog and the book I have discover that I truly love to write. It is my element. I write with the purpose that my reader can take the information – or story – and use it to better their life.
