Steve Kantner is an outdoor writer, editor, all-around fishing authority, and occasional guide whose byline has appeared in Fly Fisherman, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Salt Water Fly Fishing, Fly Rod & Reel, Fly Tier, Salt Water Sportsman, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Florida Sportsman, Warm Water Fly Fishing, and Boat Trader.com magazines (the print edition, where he worked as an editor), as well as in Florida Fishing Weekly (he was the assistant editor and later, opinion columnist), the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and online at www.flylifemagazine.com, www.fishtrack.com and www.lmrtackle.com.
During his college years, Steve worked for a tackle retailer selling salt water tackle and rigging trolling baits. He went on to host a drive-time fishing radio show and later, appeared in various televised episodes, as well as commercials, that showcased his cameo specialty: fishing from shore. In the years that followed, he produced a series of fly fishing seminars, and he continues to teach fly casting on an individual basis.
Steve is familiar with all types of tackle—from tenkara and ultralight to offshore trolling gear. While at the University of Miami, he majored in zoology, which enhanced his understanding of aquatic biology. After graduation, he served in the Army, where he was stationed in the Pacific Northwest. That’s where he first became acquainted with steelhead and salmon.
Since then, Steve has fished Brazil and Costa Rica (where he released a 500-pound black marlin), as well as the Bahamas. He also fishes the Midwest (including western Virginia), as well as the Rockies. Yet his true expertise lies in fishing South Florida—including the Everglades—where a friend came up with the Landcaptain moniker.
Steve has lectured on all types of fishing to a wide range of audiences—the IGFA included—and has worked as a blue water mate. He has tied flies professionally and fished commercially. Yet he’s now content to write salt and fresh water copy, and make occasional forays to speak professionally. Still, this Lifetime Member of the International Federation of Fly Fishers admits to his love for “clear mountain streams and the tiniest of spinner falls.”
In 2011, Steve assisted his boyhood friend, Tom Greene in writing “A Net Full of Tails” (another Amazon title), a collection of stories set against a backdrop of unspoiled fishing during the 1950s and ’60s.
Ultimate Guide to Fishing South Florida on Foot is Steve’s first Stackpole title.
Steve resides with his wife, Vicki, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
