Mary Jo Peebles

Mary Jo Peebles is a Psychoanalyst, Psychologist, teacher, writer, and consultant, currently practicing in Beacon, New York. She was a National Merit Scholarship recipient, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Psychology from Wellesley College and attaining her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. Her dissertation research examined personality characteristics of effective psychotherapists under the mentorship of Irving Weiner, PhD. After receiving her doctorate, she completed two Postdoctoral Fellowships, one a Systems’ approach to Children, Adolescents, and Families (inpatient and outpatient) at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and the other a Psychodynamic approach to Psychological Assessment and Psychotherapy with Adults (inpatient and outpatient) at the Menninger Clinic. Dr. Peebles went on to graduate from the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis and was a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She taught and trained Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and Social Workers at Menninger for nearly 20 years, receiving multiple awards from national organizations for her teaching and publications. Later she joined the Medical Staff of Chestnut Lodge Hospital, once clinical home to Frieda Fromm-Reichmann and Harold Searles. Peebles is Board Certified in both Clinical Psychology and Psychological Hypnosis and has trained in and practiced biofeedback and neuropsychological testing. She has published articles and chapters on trauma, empathy, countertransference, psychological testing, and harm in psychotherapy, as well as four books, one of which has been translated into Japanese.
