A R Davey

A R Davey, Alan Roy Davey, has had his novels published in hardback by Hodder & Stoughton and in paperback by Coronet as well as in eBook format.

Alan has led a peripatetic life and has viewed the world from many different perspectives. His experiences, particularly those gained whilst working as a counsellor and therapist have convinced him that the REAL story, the one that should be told, is found somewhere behind the obvious one.

He believes the real story is about WHY people do what they do - why they trigger events which change their own and other people's lives - and his novels reflect this because his initial concern is to tell a good, believable story that will be enjoyed and remembered.

Although the writing seeds were sown very early - he produced a comic style story book when he was eight years old - two unlikely events really triggered his career as a writer.

First, when Alan was a young child his father, who struggled to make a living as a painter & decorator, reluctantly accepted a complete library in settlement of money he was owed for work he had done. The several thousand books filled the attic of the family's rented Victorian house and Alan searched through them looking for interesting titles.

Alan cannot remember being taught to read or write but he does remember finding Mr Midshipman Easy by Captain Marryat and how exciting it was to read. As soon as he finished that book he read more and more books by many other writers - and quickly found that books were tickets to fascinating places, events and ways of living that were far beyond the limited life he led in a London backstreet.

That fired Alan's imagination and creativity and he began producing hand made comics and hand written paperback books which he sold for pennies to generate his first income as a writer.

When he was twelve he acquired and repaired a broken Imperial typewriter on which he wrote one and a half stories before it broke again - this time beyond repair.

Alan resigned himself to hand writing his stories once again but woke up on Christmas morning to find a brand new Royal Royalite portable typewriter beside his bed - a surprising gift from his father who was struggling to make living and who had become very critical and dismissive of Alan, the perpetual daydreamer.

Alan learned later that his father had read and enjoyed the typewritten stories, and had borrowed money to buy the Royalite to encourage Alan to continue writing.

Acquiring the library and the purchase of the ill afforded typewriter were the two significant occurrences which set Alan on the writing road and strongly influenced the rest of his life.

Alan still has the Royalite, and an article about the typewriter and Alan appeared in the September 2014 edition of the UK Saga Magazine.

Born in 1945 and married since 1967 Alan has overcome significant health problems to build several successful careers, and he has travelled widely. He has now decided it is time to settle in one place and to concentrate fully upon story telling and his other writing.

In addition to writing novels as A R Davey, Alan also draws on over fifty years of business building and management experience, and many years as a Counsellor and Personal Coach, to write management, leadership and personal development text books as Alan R Davey.
