W M. Aslam

Aslam is an author, visual artist, and lifelong storyteller based in the north east of England.

He has been lost in books since a very young age. The daily read-aloud sessions in primary school (Roald Dahl was everyone’s favourite) left a permanent mark, as did European fairy-tale masters he discovered as a teenager: Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Joseph Jacobs. Those magical, moral stories still echo in the short tales he writes today: modern fables that weave mystery, adventure, wisdom, and a touch of the spiritual.

University introduced him to Jane Austen, the Brontës, Dickens, James Joyce, R.L. Stevenson, Lewis Carroll, and C.S. Lewis; authors who taught him the power of voice, character, and imagined worlds. After reading One Thousand and One Nights he was inspired to write more fantastical adventure stories, such as Scott McNally’s Mystery, and The Life and Death of Danny Mcghee.

Before turning to writing, Aslam worked as an artist, and later as a primary-school teaching assistant. It was while surrounded by wide-eyed children and supportive colleagues that he completed a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and began his first novel. To date he has self-published three novels, three novellas, a collection of short stories, a health book, and five books of poetry, and also written three short plays. His stories for young adult readers follow the curious English schoolboy Toby Glass on his fantastical adventures in China, while his writing for adults explores family, identity, love, and the quiet miracles of everyday life in His Uncle’s Daughter.

A solitary soul who admits to having dreamt through many a school lesson, Aslam still writes the way he always has: alone, with endless cups of tea, conjuring new realities inspired by those great writers of his childhood and the conversations he overhears in cafés and classrooms.

Thank you for visiting his author page. He hopes his words bring you a little magic, comfort, or wonder; whichever you need most today.
