Richard S. Bailey

Richard S. Bailey has worked as an author, producer, director, designer, actor, and consultant in theatre, film, television, and radio. He is the recipient of the LA Weekly Award as a Director, Hollywood DramaLogue Awards for Producing, Directing, and Design, as well as European Press awards as an actor.

He majored in theatre and minored in film at San Francisco State College during the wild and tumultuous ‘60’s. At that time he was an on air sports reporter in local radio, produced talk radio, worked as a film editor in local television, and began working as a professional actor.

In 1977, when Nobel Prize laureate Samuel Beckett directed his play “Krapp’s Last Tape” at the West Berlin Academy of Art, he asked for Bailey to be invited work with him. At that time Beckett asked Bailey to wait until he was 69 and then perform the role of Krapp in what termed he wanted to be “the final word” on the play. Bailey couldn’t wait, when he turned 60, he performed “Shuffle, Shuffle, Step: Three Short Plays by Samuel Beckett” to rave reviews in the Los Angeles Times, Daily Variety, and Backstage West.

He is the former Producing Director of the San Quentin Drama Workshop, with whom he toured throughout the United States and Europe; Associate Director of the Los Angeles Theatre Center and Los Angeles Actors' Theatre, and Executive Director/News Director of the Deaf Broadcast Network. He is the Artistic Director of Theatre Zed and ZedArts.
