Stephen Albert Harmon

Stephen A. Harmon is an associate professor of African and Middle Eastern history at Pittsburg State University. A specialist in Islamic history and culture, Harmon completed his Ph.D. in African history at UCLA in 1988. He is a two-time Fulbright scholar who has conducted extensive field research in West Africa. Most recently he did field work in Mali from Sept. – Dec. 2012. There, he interviewed Malians displaced from the then terrorist-occupied northern regions, as well as experts in Islamic and international law, journalists, student leaders, and US embassy staff. His book, "Terrorism and Insurgency in the Sahara-Sahel Region: Corruption, Contraband, Jihad and the Mali War of 2012-2013" was released in November of 2014 by Ashgate Publishing. Harmon’s research has appeared in numerous academic journals, and he is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences, notably a United Nations-sponsored workshop on terrorism in Turin, Italy, in 2008.
