John J. Sloan III

John J. Sloan, III (1956 - ) was born and raised in Detroit. He earned a BS (1980) and an MS (1982) in criminal justice and sociology from Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.D. in sociology in 1987 from Purdue University, where we has awarded a dissertation fellowship by the National Institute of Justice to support his research on prosecutorial and judicial discretion. He joined the criminal justice faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1988 and moved through the faculty ranks to full professor in 2010. During his 27 years at UAB, he served as Interim Chair (2003-2004) and Chair of the Department of Justice Sciences (2004-2014) and co-founded (in 2011) the Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research, one of 28 University Wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers. There, he served as both Assistant Director (2012-2013) and Director (2014-2015). He retired from the university in June of 2015 and received Emeritus status in July of 2016. He continues to engage in scholarly research and writing.
