After receiving his Ph. D in Materials Science & Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1972, he worked at several US R&D Centers such as the US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) in Cleveland Ohio, and at International Nickel Company R&D Center, Suffern New York.
After returning to Korea he served for 19 years as the founding & chartered president of Handong Global University (HGU) in Pohang, South Korea. HGU is an international associate member of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU). Prior to becoming the President of HGU in 1994, Dr. Kim was a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) for 15 years. In 2008, Dr. Kim was appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Science & Technology, Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science & Technology (PACEST) of the Republic of Korea in 2008. In 2009, he also served as the Chairman of Educational Committee of the Korea National Commission of UNESCO.
After retiring from the Presidency of HGU in Feb. 2014, he now serves as the President of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK). He is the Co-Chairman of the Academic Impact Korea (AIK) in support of United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and also assumes the Chairman of Global Advancement & Supporting as a Member of Board of Trustee of HGU Foundation.
