Steve’s first book Poet In California (1992, 2003) received positive commentary from two National Book award winners, a Pultizer Prize winner, and the current U.S. Poet Laureate.

Joy Harjo, our U.S. Poet Laureate says, “I’m glad you’re out there working on the questions that baffle and inspire all of us.”

Rachel Hadas, Distinguished Professor at Rutgers says, “I thought of Rilke, Whitman, and some of the Modern Greek poets I admire...” Pulitzer Prize winner James Merrill says, “Poet In California has many beautiful moments.” Charles Guenther says, “An extraordinarily fresh and vibrant collection...showing the best heritage from the Surrealists and Pound/Eliot.” Gerald Stern a National Book award winner says, “Poet In California is a fine book that reaches for the absolute without shame, and with art. It benefits, if anything, from your separation—apparent—from schools and movements. I wish you the greatest luck. I will continue to read you.”
