Laurie Pepper was born in Los Angeles in1940. Her latest book is *Every Woman Alone*, an inspiring collection of oral histories of women on their own in America. She’s been a professional photographer working for newspapers, magazines, and record companies. In 1969 married musician Art Pepper. She started publishing company, Arthur Pepper Music, and, until his death in 1982, managed his comeback, his tours, bands, and recordings. She runs a record label—Widow’s Taste—featuring his recorded live performances. She has written three other books—*Straight Life* (with Art Pepper), the classic jazz biography, praised in TIME, THE VILLAGE VOICE, THE NEW YORKER, etc., *ART: Why I Stuck with a Junkie Jazzman*, and *Me and My Mother (and Others)*, and dozens of published liner notes/essays on music. She is currently cohabiting with a beloved partner and a beloved dog. She has one daughter and one granddaughter. She’s been sober for 36 years.
