José Brunner

The themes of my publications reflect the broad spectrum of my research interests, which includes the mutual relations between law, memory and identity, the history and politics of psychoanalysis, the politics of the mental health discourse on trauma, psychological explanations of Nazism, modern and contemporary political thought, the history of personal compensation for Holocaust survivors in Germany and Israel and the emergence of new human rights.

This led me to a multiplicity of academic positions. My academic career started in Political Science, but since 1996 I hold a joint appointment as Associate Professor at the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas and the Buchmann Faculty of Law, both at Tel Aviv University. From 2005 to 2013 I also served as Director of the Minerva Institute for German History of Tel Aviv University. In 2011 I co-founded Israel's first Legal Clinic for the Rights of Holocaust Survivors. Currently I am in charge of an interdisciplinary studies program in law and the humanities that I established five years ago, and Senior Editor of History & Memory, an international journal published by Indiana University Press.
