Gary Suffern was born in 1945 of Irish/German parents in Orange, California. He was raised on a working ranch in Orange, attended Orange High School graduating in 1963, attended Fullerton College from 1963 to 1965 attaining a AA degree in Industrial Engineering. Attended California State University at Long Beach until the threat of being drafted lead him to join the Officer Candidate School in the U.S. Army. Attended the Engineer OCS Training Regiment at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and trained troops for 10 months at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. In October 1968 arrived in Viet Nam, was assigned to the 19th Combat Engineer Battalion attached to the 173rd Airborne Division at LZ North English several miles north of Bong Son. This was called a 'Pacified Zone', designated after the Tet Offensive of 1968 to placate the American public who were demonstrating against the war.
After returning from Viet Nam Gary began writing about His time in the 19th with a coward for a company commander. 'Pacified Zone' was published in 2004 with good reviews from the New York Times Book Review Section.
Gary joined the Fullerton Police Department in 1970 and chased criminals for 11 years in patrol, traffic and investigation. Taking an early retirement he change careers and entered the Journeyman Electrical Trade for 35 years. Currently retired from working Gary is in the process of publishing his second book 'Caterer's Wake' which is now available through Amazon Publishing 'Createspace.com'. 'Caterer's Wake' is a fictional rendition of a detective chasing two serial killers throughout Southern California at the behest of eight wealthy parents. Gary currently lives with his wife Ellen on Camano Island, Washington and is working on his third and fourth books.
