Marilyn Hope Lake

Marilyn Hope Lake, Ph.D., is an award winning writer and painter, a retired university faculty member; and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Best known for her children’s picture book, Buddy and the Grandcats, she writes short fiction, poetry, drama and memoir. Dr. Lake lives in Hutchinson, Kansas, with her husband/illustrator, Denton Warn, and two canine companions. Her love of family and nature is illustrated in her work.

Published books include the two listed here, and her creative dissertation, a collection of 13 short stories loosely based on the strong women in her family. OUR MOTHERS'GHOSTS is available on microfiche at the Library of Congress. The collection emphasizes family relations, especially those between mothers and daughters over four generations from 1924-1999. The stories reveal the shared hopes and dreams, struggles and successes of women in one mid=western family throughout the 20th century. The introduction to the dissertation discusses both the biological and literary heritage that American women writers have, as wellas, the writing process for one of the stories.
